Tottenham Hotspur got off to a fantastic start for their 2022-23 Champions League campaign with a 2-0 win over 10-man Marseille at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Wednesday. Although Spurs were very slow to find their stride, Brazilian forward Richarlison scored a second half brace, taking Spurs to victory.

Tottenham, who missed out on the Champions League for the past two seasons, had been poor in the first half, but in the 76th minute, Richarlison eventually ensured a wonderful start for Antonio Conte’s team.

Marseille have enjoyed an unbeaten start to the season and were comfortable in 45 minutes. Tottenham could not establish any rhythm or intensity, and the away team looked sharper all over the pitch.

Matteo Guendouzi controlled the midfield and forced Tottenham keeper Hugo Lloris into a low save in first-half stoppage time.

In the 48th minute, Marseille suffered a blow when Son poked the ball on with his toe and was rudely toppled by Mbemba, who was shown a red card by Slovenian.

Then, Son dragged a good chance wide before Conte made his first change on the hour, taking advantage of the numerical advantage to replace right wing-back Emerson Royal with winger Dejan Kulusevski, who soon sparked the hosts into life.

Kulusevski was influential, and they piled pressure on the visitors. Ivan Perisic cut back onto his left foot from the right and found Richarlison with a precise cross. The Brazilian powered a header through the gloves of Pau Lopez.

Five minutes later, there was little the goalkeeper could do with Richarlison’s second which came. Hojbjerg delivering the ammunition from the left this time and Richarlison bulleting a clever-headed finish off the post.

After two years away from the Champions League, they are back with a success. With not fluent yet unbeaten records this season, Richarlison has become a new hero.
